  • Needle and thread or sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Fabric
  • Velcro, snaps or other closures
  • Ribbons and other embellishments
  • Pattern for your project
If you're a seamstress, whipping up an adorable baby dress or two shouldn't be a challenge. Simply find a pattern you love, cut it to size and get sewing! However, not everyone has the sewing skills to craft handmade cheap baby clothes. Don't worry! You can still make cute, comfortable clothes for children.

An easy way to make cheap baby clothes involves using a pre-made t-shirt as a base for a dress. This requires basic sewing skills, but isn't too challenging. A beginner could make a dress like this in less than two hours. Find a shirt in your child's size from a baby clothes store and choose some fabric to match. Cut the shirt off a few inches from the bottom, leaving only the top. This will become the bodice of your dress. Then, cut two rectangles from your fabric. The width of the rectangle should be your child's waist measurement divided in half, plus two or three inches. The length should be how long you want the skirt of the dress to be. Remember to add space for a seam and a hem.

Place the fabric right sides together, and then sew the side seams. Pin the tube you just made to the bottom of the t-shirt and sew a seam, attaching it to the shirt. Finally, hem the bottom of the skirt. Voila! Cute baby clothes that you made yourself!

Even if you don't know how to sew, you can still modify items of clothing quickly and easily to make trendy baby clothes. Purchase a plain onesie or t-shirt from a baby clothes store, and then pick up some iron-on appliques. You can purchase them from a craft store or look online for even more variety. Simply iron the applique to the onesie or shirt, following the directions on your applique.

Want to get a little more creative? Fusible webbing is a fabric adhesive that lets you design your own appliques. You can use fun patterned fabric cut to any shape you like or use woven ribbons to add a little excitement to a standard baby onesie. Decide on a design with ribbons or fabric, then cut out your shapes. Cut the fusible webbing to the desired size, and then iron it on. You'll have a unique item that nobody can buy in baby clothes stores!
